Short answer: UX, user experience, is everything a person goes through with your business, from finding you to getting what they came for. UI, user interface, is what they use along the way, which on a website means the screens: layout, color, buttons and type. A good UI is part of a good UX, but it can’t fix a need the service doesn’t meet.

What UX means

Don Norman and Jakob Nielsen of NN/g define user experience as every aspect of a user’s interaction with a company, its services and its products.

The first requirement, they write, is to meet the exact needs of the customer without fuss or bother. Real UX goes beyond giving people what they say they want or ticking off features.

It also takes more than one discipline: engineering, marketing, graphic and industrial design and interface design have to work together.

What UI means

The Interaction Design Foundation describes UI design as the design of graphical user interfaces and other forms, such as voice. It is more concerned with the surface and overall feel of a design.

The foundation advises drawing attention to key features with color, brightness and contrast, and not using too many colors or buttons. UI is a craft that builds an essential part of the user experience.

UX and UI side by side

Question UX UI
What it covers Every part of the interaction with the business, its services and its products The surface and overall feel of the screens
What it asks Does it meet the need without fuss? Is it clear, consistent and easy to use?
Typical work Research, personas, wireframes, prototypes and tests Layout, color, contrast and the controls people use
Usability One part of a broader idea A quality of the interface itself

From NN/g’s definition of user experience and the Interaction Design Foundation’s pages on UX and UI design, read November 4, 2026.

NN/g’s example shows why the difference matters. A film search can have a perfect interface, but if its database only holds major studio films, the experience is still poor for someone looking for a small independent release.

How to improve both on your website

  1. List the few things visitors come to do, such as ask for a quote or book a visit.
  2. Count the steps each one takes, and cut the ones that add nothing.
  3. Make the main action on each page stand out with color and contrast.
  4. Remove extra colors, buttons and choices that compete with it.
  5. Keep buttons, forms and headings looking the same on every page.
  6. Watch a few real customers use the site, and fix where they hesitate.
  7. Check the service behind the screen too: a clear form only helps if someone answers it.

Our website wireframe guide covers planning the steps before the design, and our accessibility checker guide covers checking that everyone can use the result.

How our own guides apply it

We built our guides around one need: get the answer fast, in the way that suits you. On November 4, 2026, we counted what our published English guides offer.

Of 139 guides, 138 open with a short answer and 138 have a listen button with an audio version, and all 139 include at least three quick answers. The one without a short answer and audio is our first guide, made with an older page layout.

Those are UI choices, a box, a button and a list, made to serve a UX goal: someone in a hurry reads the first lines, and someone driving can listen.

Before you call your site easy to use

  • You know the main tasks visitors come to do.
  • Each task takes as few steps as possible.
  • The main action stands out on every page.
  • Buttons and forms look and work the same everywhere.
  • Real customers have tried the site.
  • Someone answers every form and message.

RememberUI is what people see and use; UX is whether they get what they came for. Work on both, starting with the need.

If you want a site designed around what your customers need, our web design service can build it with you.

Quick answers about UX and UI

What is the difference between UX and UI?

UX is the whole experience someone has with a company, its services and its products. UI is the interface they use: on a website, the screens, layout, color and controls. NN/g calls the UI an extremely important part of the design, but only a part.

Is UX the same as usability?

No. NN/g defines usability as a quality of the UI: whether it is easy to learn, efficient to use and pleasant. The total user experience is a broader idea that also covers the service behind the screen.

What does a UX designer do?

The Interaction Design Foundation lists user research, personas, wireframes, interactive prototypes and testing designs among the usual tasks. The work starts from the users and their context and repeats until the design works for them.

Can a good UI make up for bad UX?

Not for long. NN/g’s example is a film search with a perfect interface: if the database only holds films from the major studios, the experience is still poor for someone looking for a small independent release.

Does a small business website need both?

In practice, yes. The UI is what visitors see and use, and the UX is whether they get what they came for, from the first search to the reply. A clear page with a slow or missing answer still loses the customer.
