Short answer: Instagram insights are the free numbers Instagram gives every public account: how many times your content was seen, how many accounts saw it and interacted with it, and how your followers change. In the app you open them from your dashboard, and account insights cover up to the past 90 days.

What Instagram insights show

Instagram says a public account can use free insights to learn about trends across its followers and how its content performs with its audience. The app opens with an overview of four numbers: Views, Interactions, Content you shared and New followers. Each post, reel, story and live video also has its own insights.

A professional account opens them from the Professional dashboard, and a personal account from Your dashboard. If your business still uses a personal account, our guide to setting up an Instagram business account shows how to switch.

How to see your Instagram insights

  1. Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap More to go to your Settings and activity.
  3. On a professional account, tap Insights below For professionals; on a personal account, tap Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
  4. Read the overview, which covers the past 30 days of Views, Interactions, Content you shared and New followers.
  5. Tap an insight to see more detail, and tap the (i) in the top right to read how each metric is defined.
  6. Tap the date menu to pick a preset period or your own dates within the past 90 days.
  7. To check one post or reel, open it and tap View insights.

On a computer, go to instagram.com and select Dashboard in the left menu, then Insights below For professionals. The Insights menu switches between Account and Content, for the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days or your own dates. Meta Business Suite also has insights for your Facebook Page and Instagram account, as our guide to Meta Business Suite explains.

What each insight means

Insight What it counts Good to know
Views The times your posts, stories, reels, live videos and ads were played or displayed One account can add several views
Viewers The unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once The base of the audience demographics
Interactions The actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares Shows what people do, not only what they see
Accounts engaged The unique accounts that interacted with your content Split into followers and non-followers on posts, stories and Live
Total followers Growth, top locations, age range and the times your followers are most active Needs at least 100 followers
Content you shared The stories, reels and posts you published in the period Opens your content library, with filters

Our summary of the Instagram Help Center, read November 6, 2026.

Instagram marks Viewers and Accounts engaged as estimated and in development, and says Views is still being introduced gradually. Read them as trends from one month to the next, not as exact counts.

Insights for one post, reel or story

Below each post and reel there is a View insights button. For a story you are still showing, open it and tap Activity, then Insights; past stories are under Content you shared. Insights for posts, reels and stories stay available for up to two years, even after a story expires and can no longer be viewed.

Reels add their own numbers. Watch time is the total time your reel played, replays included. Average watch time is watch time divided by initial views, and Follows counts the accounts that started following you after watching. Stories add profile activity, such as profile visits, follows or website clicks.

A boosted post or reel also gets ad insights: the results for the ad goal, the cost per ad goal and what you spent. Boosting is only for professional accounts, and our guide to running Instagram ads explains how it works.

When some insights don’t show up

Insights need a public account, personal or professional. Instagram says you may not see past insights if you made your account public recently. If you switch to a private account, you lose access, and switching back to public within 90 days brings the past data back.

To show audience demographics, such as top cities, age ranges and gender, Instagram needs a preset timeframe and over 100 accounts reached or engaged. If the last 7 days show nothing, Instagram suggests a longer preset, such as the last 30 days, the previous month or the last 90 days. Follower trends start at 100 followers.

Before you trust your Instagram insights

  • Your account is public.
  • You compare the same period each time, such as the last 30 days.
  • You read Viewers and Accounts engaged, not only Views.
  • You open View insights on your best posts and reels.
  • You check watch time and follows on each reel.
  • You read boosted posts apart, because they add ad results.

RememberInstagram insights are free on any public account. Open them from your dashboard, compare the same period each month, and use View insights on each post to see what your audience watches and shares.

Quick answers about Instagram insights

Are Instagram insights free?

Yes. Instagram says any public account can use free insights to learn about trends across its followers and how its content performs. A professional account finds them in the Professional dashboard, and a personal account in Your dashboard.

Why can’t I see insights on my Instagram account?

Your account has to be public, personal or professional. Instagram says you lose access to insights if you switch to a private account. If you make it public again within 90 days, you get the past data back.

How far back do Instagram insights go?

Account insights cover any period within the past 90 days, from the last 7 days to the last 90. Insights for each post, reel and story stay available for up to two years, even after a story expires.

What is the difference between views and viewers?

Views count the times your content was played or displayed, so one account can add several. Viewers count the unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once. For reels, an account counts as a viewer whether or not the reel played.

Why don’t I see my audience’s age and location?

Instagram shows audience demographics only with preset timeframes and when you reach or engage more than 100 accounts. If the last 7 days show nothing, try a longer preset such as the last 30 or 90 days. Follower trends need at least 100 followers.
