Short answer: Google turned off the free websites made with Business Profiles on March 5, 2024. Visitors were sent to the profile until June 10, 2024, and since then an old business.site address shows a “Page not found” error. Your profile still has a website field: build the site somewhere else and enter its full address there.

What happened to the Google Business Profile website

Websites made with Business Profiles were free, basic sites built from the information on your profile. Their addresses ended in business.site or negocio.site. Google turned them off in 2024, in two steps:

Date What changed
March 5, 2024 The sites stopped working and visitors were redirected to the Business Profile. Ads linked to those sites could be disapproved. That month Google also removed business.site and negocio.site addresses from the profile’s website field.
June 10, 2024 The redirect ended. Visitors get a “Page not found” error.
Today The website field takes the address of a site you build somewhere else. Google’s old help page on these sites now redirects to its help on editing a profile.

Google’s advice was to build a new site with another tool and add the new address to the profile. Nothing else on the profile changed.

From Google Business Profile Help, “Websites made with Google Business Profiles are turned off”, in the copies the Internet Archive kept in January and December 2024. That the sites were free is from Google’s blog of November 9, 2017.

How to add a website to your Google Business Profile

Sign in to the Google Account linked to your Business Profile. Then:

  1. Open your Business Profile on Google Search. In the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right.
  2. Select Edit profile.
  3. Find the Website field. If it’s empty and you used to have a Google website, that’s why: Google removed business.site and negocio.site addresses from it in March 2024.
  4. Enter the full address, starting with https:// (or http:// if your site has no https).
  5. Select Save.

Google’s help adds two checks for that address: make sure Googlebot isn’t blocked on your site, and use Search Console to look for penalties. Some business categories can also add links for online orders, reservations or appointments.

From Google Business Profile Help, “Edit your Business Profile”, read November 2, 2026.

If the old address is still out there

The old address doesn’t work anymore, and anything that still points to it leads to the error page. Where to look:

  • Your own domain. If a domain you bought forwarded to the Google site, that forwarding only worked until June 10, 2024. Google’s help says to sign in to your hosting company and use a Redirect option, or something similar, to send the domain to your new site.
  • Google Ads. From March 5, 2024, ads linked to a website made with a Business Profile could be disapproved and stop running. Google’s reason: the domain in their display URL no longer matched the final URL. Send them to your new site or a landing page, or pause the campaigns.
  • Everything else. Business cards, social profiles, email signatures and directory listings with the old address now lead to the error page. Change them to the new one.

From the same Google help page on the websites that were turned off.

Picking the new site

Google’s help named site builders to use instead: Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Google Sites, Shopify, Durable, Weebly, Strikingly and WordPress. Our article on what a website costs in 2026 compares a builder with a site made by a freelancer or an agency.

Start with a page that loads fast on a phone and says what you do, where you do it and how to reach you.

Before you change the website field

  • The address opens your home page on a phone, not a login screen or an empty domain.
  • It starts with https:// and has no typos: copy it from the browser’s address bar.
  • Googlebot isn’t blocked on the site. Search Console can confirm it.
  • Any domain that used to forward to business.site now forwards to the new site.
  • Order, reservation or appointment links, if your category has them, point to the new site.
  • Your Google Ads, if you run them, point to the new site or a landing page, with the same domain in the display URL.

RememberGoogle no longer builds websites from a Business Profile. Make your site with another tool, enter its full address in the website field and update every link that still points to business.site or negocio.site.

Quick answers about the Google Business Profile website

Can I still make a free website with my Google Business Profile?

No. Google turned off the websites made with Business Profiles on March 5, 2024, and stopped redirecting their addresses on June 10, 2024. Google’s help pointed to other site builders, among them Google Sites, and asked owners to add the new address to the profile.

What happened to my business.site website?

Since June 10, 2024, visitors to that address get a “Page not found” error. In March 2024 Google also removed business.site and negocio.site addresses from the profile’s website field. Build a new site and enter its full address in that field.

How do I add a website to my Google Business Profile?

Open your Business Profile on Google Search and select Edit profile, or tap Business and then Edit profile in the Google Maps app. Enter the full address, with https:// or http://, in the website field and select Save.

Will my Google Ads stop if they point to business.site?

Google said that from March 5, 2024, ads linked to a website made with a Business Profile may be disapproved and stop running. Google’s reason: the display URL’s domain wouldn’t match the final URL. Point them to your new site or a landing page, or pause them.

What do I do with a domain that forwarded to my Google website?

Google’s help said that forwarding only worked until June 10, 2024. Sign in to the company where you host the domain, use its Redirect option or something similar, and send the domain to your new website.
