Short answer: An Instagram business account is a professional account set to Business. To switch, open your profile, tap More, then under For professionals tap Account type and tools and Switch to professional account. Pick a category, choose Business and add your contact details. You can switch back whenever you want.

Instagram calls business and creator accounts “professional accounts”. Both give you insights, ads and message tools. The trade-off is that a professional account is always public.

Personal, Business or Creator

Every Instagram account starts as personal. Instagram offers two professional types, and it describes who each one is for:

  • Business. In Instagram’s words, “best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organizations and service providers”.
  • Creator. “Best for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers.”

Both types get the professional dashboard, insights, ads, a contact button, a category label, a second inbox with Primary, General and Requests folders, and tools to remove spam followers. Instagram also says the posts and reels of professional accounts may appear in search engine results, a setting you can turn off.

Instagram describes action buttons such as Book now for business accounts. Its page on creator accounts adds saved replies (shortcuts for common answers) and category labels like athlete, author or blogger.

The category you pick during the switch doesn’t decide the type. Instagram says so in a note: you choose Business or Creator in a separate step. If you run a shop, a clinic, a restaurant or a service, Business is the type Instagram has in mind.

Switch in the app

You need an Instagram account first. You can use the one you have or create a new one, and Instagram lets you stay logged in to up to 10 accounts at once.

  1. Go to your profile. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Open the settings. Tap More to reach Settings and activity.
  3. Find the professional tools. Under For professionals, tap Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account.
  4. Choose a category that describes what you do, then tap Switch to professional account.
  5. Pick the type. Choose Business and tap Next.
  6. Add contact details and tap Next, or tap Don’t use my contact info to skip.
  7. Connect a Facebook Page with Login to Facebook, or tap Skip. Instagram marks this step as optional.

On a computer the path is similar. At instagram.com, click More, then Settings, and under For professionals select Account type and tools. After you choose the type and category, click Done and confirm with Continue.

Already have a creator account? You don’t need to start over. In Account type and tools, tap Account type, then Switch account type, and choose Business.

What changes after the switch

Instagram is clear that a professional account limits some things a personal one allows:

  • The account becomes public. Professional accounts can’t be set to private. If yours was private, it goes public, and every pending follow request is accepted automatically.
  • A category label shows under your photo. If a Facebook Page is linked, it’s the same category as the Page. You can hide it later.
  • A Contact button can appear near the top of the profile, with directions, a phone number and an email address. Anyone who taps it sees that information.
  • You get the professional dashboard and insights, and you can run ads from the account.
  • Sharing to Facebook narrows. With a linked Page, your Instagram posts can go to Facebook only through that Page, not to another Page or to a personal profile.

There’s also a change you won’t see in the app. Meta’s Business Help Center says a professional account must belong to a business portfolio. Switching creates one automatically, with the same name as your Instagram account, and you can see it at business.facebook.com.

Connect a Facebook Page

A Facebook Page isn’t required, but Instagram recommends connecting your business Page to get the most out of its business tools.

With the two linked, Instagram says you can run ads on both apps from the Page and answer comments and Direct messages from the inbox in Meta Business Suite. You also get features like appointment booking buttons, and you can pay for promotions with the payment method you use on Facebook.

Before linking, Meta asks for three things. The Instagram account has to be professional, you need full control of the Page, and the Page and the account must share one business portfolio. An Instagram account can sit in only one portfolio at a time. If the switch created a new one, you may need to move the account into the portfolio that holds your Page.

  1. Open Edit profile. On a business account, scroll to Public business information.
  2. Tap Page, then Connect or create, and Continue.
  3. Sign in. Tap Login to Facebook and confirm the account, or tap Switch Facebook account.
  4. Choose the Page and tap Connect. No Page yet? Create a new Facebook Page starts one from there.

If you still need the Page, our guide to creating a Facebook business page walks you through it.

Think about access before you link. Meta’s help warns that, once the two are joined, whoever can manage one of them can manage both.

You can also manage the account from Meta Business Suite on a computer.

Someone with full control of the portfolio goes to Settings, clicks Instagram accounts under Accounts, then Add and Add Instagram account, and signs in to Instagram. Meta says new campaigns and ad sets then include Instagram as a placement automatically. If you plan to advertise on both apps, see our Meta Ads service.

Complete the profile

Most of it lives in Edit profile, and the business fields sit under Public business information.

  • Bio. Up to 150 characters, visible to anyone. Say what you sell and where.
  • Links. Up to 5 websites, under Links and Add external link. Anyone, on or off Instagram, can see them. Keep your main page at the top: you can reorder them whenever you want.
  • Contact options. Phone, email and an address for directions. Use Profile display to show or hide the contact details and the category label.
  • Category. The business category you chose in the switch. You can change it here.
  • Action buttons. Book now, Reserve or Order food, connected to a partner service, or a lead form that collects contact details. Only one shows at a time.

Action buttons come with conditions. Instagram says the feature is being introduced gradually, there’s a limited list of partners, and you need an existing account with the partner before you can select it.

Want your shop on the Instagram Map? Instagram’s route goes through Facebook: edit the address on your Facebook Page and connect the Page to your Instagram account. Within 48 hours, Instagram says, your location shows on the map and can be tagged in posts and stories.

Insights and the dashboard

The professional dashboard is where Instagram puts your performance, its professional tools and educational content. Insights show who your followers are, when they’re online and how each post did.

In the app, the overview covers Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. You can pick preset or custom timeframes within the past 90 days.

Follower trends such as top locations, age range and most active times appear once you have at least 100 followers. Audience demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached.

Boosting a post is also a professional-account feature. When you boost, Instagram adds ad insights such as ad goal results, cost per ad goal and spend.

Switch back to a personal account

You can go back at any time:

  1. Go to your profile and tap Menu in the top right (you may also need to tap Settings).
  2. Tap Account type and tools, then Account type and Switch account type.
  3. Tap Switch to personal account, then Switch to personal to confirm.

Instagram warns that you lose access to ads and to Meta business tools such as Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. Any Facebook Page connected to the account is disconnected. If the account stays public, you keep your dashboard and insights. Switching back doesn’t make it private: that’s a separate setting.

RememberAn Instagram business account is a professional account set to Business. Switch in Account type and tools, choose Business, add your contact details, and connect a Facebook Page if you want ads and a shared inbox. The account will be public, and you can switch back whenever you want.

Before you call the setup done, check:

  • The profile shows Business as the account type.
  • The category describes what you sell.
  • The bio says what you do and where, in 150 characters.
  • Your main website is the first link.
  • Phone, email or address work from the Contact button.
  • The Facebook Page, if you use one, is connected under Public business information.

Quick answers

Can an Instagram business account be private?

No. Instagram says professional accounts can’t be set to private, and that applies to creator accounts as well. When a private account switches to Business, it goes public and pending follow requests are accepted. If you need a private account again, switch back to personal first, then turn on the private setting.

Do I need a Facebook Page for an Instagram business account?

No. Instagram marks the Facebook step as optional during the switch, so you can skip it and connect a Page later from Edit profile. Instagram still recommends linking your business Page, because that’s what opens features like ads run from the Page, a shared inbox in Meta Business Suite and booking buttons.

Does the category I choose make my account Business or Creator?

No. Instagram notes that the category doesn’t determine the account type. You pick Business or Creator in its own step. The category is the label that shows below your profile picture, and you can change it, or hide it, later under Public business information in Edit profile, without switching types.

Why can’t I add a Book now button to my profile?

Instagram says action buttons are being introduced gradually and the list of partners is limited, so the option may not be available to you yet. You also need an existing account with one of the partners before you can select it. Only one action button shows on a profile at a time.

Can my Instagram account belong to two business portfolios?

No. Meta’s Business Help Center says an Instagram account can be in only one business portfolio at a time. Switching to a professional account creates a new portfolio. If your Page lives in an older one, remove the Instagram account from the new portfolio and add it to the one with your Page.
