Short answer: A Facebook Marketplace ad is a paid ad you build in Meta Ads Manager, shown to people who shop on Marketplace in the Facebook app. It isn’t the same as listing an item for sale. It can’t run on Marketplace alone, because it also shows in Feed. A person selling an item can boost the listing instead.
What a Marketplace ad is
Meta describes Facebook Marketplace as a place to discover and buy items. It adds that listing an item for sale isn’t the same as creating a paid ad that appears when people shop there.
You build a Marketplace ad in Meta Ads Manager, where you set your own budget. Then you choose where the ad runs, which Meta calls placements.
People see the ad when they shop on Marketplace in the Facebook app on their phones. It sits among other relevant products and services, and a click can take them to your website or app, or to details in Marketplace.
Ads in Marketplace carry an “Ad” label. Meta says ads that used to show a “Sponsored” label now show “Ad” instead.
All ads in Marketplace must follow Meta’s Advertising Standards.
Where the ad shows up
Meta’s Facebook Marketplace placement shows your ad on the Marketplace homepage, or when someone browses Marketplace in the Facebook app.
Ads in Marketplace also show in Feed. Meta says it isn’t currently possible for an ad to show only in Marketplace.
Meta recommends Advantage+ placements. They let the ad appear on Marketplace when it fits your settings, and on every other compatible placement on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Meta Audience Network.
Meta adds that more placements raise the number of people who can see your ad and can improve results, and that adding placements doesn’t increase the cost of your ad. Our guide to Meta Advantage+ explains what it automates.
In our view, leave Advantage+ placements on unless you have a clear reason to drop a placement.
Objectives and ad formats on Marketplace
Meta lists the objectives you can choose for an ad on Marketplace: Awareness, Engagement, Traffic, Leads and Sales.
Its page on Marketplace previews covers single image and video ads, carousel ads and collection ads.
On the Marketplace browse feed on phones, the ad can appear in two ways. Normally it takes half the width of the screen, as the Ads Manager preview shows.
Meta may show it edge to edge instead, when it believes that could improve your ad’s performance, and the preview doesn’t show that version.
Edge to edge, a carousel shows two images and people can’t swipe to see more. A collection ad shows four tiles instead of three. Either way, the images, description and call to action stay the same.
The edge-to-edge format only appears on the mobile Marketplace browse feed, not on the desktop feed. Our guide to Facebook and Instagram ad sizes lists the specs for each placement.
Selling on Marketplace is a different thing
Meta calls any attempt to buy, sell or trade products on its commerce services, Marketplace included, commerce content, even when the products are free. That content must follow its Commerce Policies.
Meta says Marketplace is intended for consumer-to-consumer sales. In the European Economic Area, the Philippines and India, businesses that try to sell there may face restrictions, and so may people selling in a business capacity. Meta names suspending their access to Marketplace and removing their listings.
Services have their own line in those policies. Commerce content may not promote buying, selling or trading services, except on the WhatsApp Business app or through Appointments in Facebook or Instagram. Job offers are out too.
In our view, that makes an ad, not a listing, the way for a service business to show up where people shop on Marketplace.
Boosting a Marketplace listing
If you sell an item on Marketplace, you can boost the listing. Meta says the feature may not be available to you yet.
A boosted listing turns into an ad on Facebook. It uses the photos, title, price and description of your listing, so you don’t need a separate ad creative.
It runs on Facebook Feed, Facebook search results and Marketplace. Meta’s page on boosted listings also names Marketplace search and Marketplace product detail pages.
For a local listing, the audience is fixed to adults aged 18 and over within 40 miles of the listing’s location. For an item with shipping, you choose the audience.
To boost it, go to Marketplace and click Your account. In Your listings, find the item and click Boost listing. Pick the recommended budget and duration or set your own, knowing there is a minimum budget to spend per day.
Verify your payment method, view the ad preview, review the payment summary and click Promote now. You can also boost a listing when you publish it.
Boosted listings must follow Meta’s Advertising Standards too. Meta adds that requirements for ads about politics or issues of importance vary by country. Where a country has an enforcement process for those ads, boosted listings won’t be eligible to run.
Buyers who are interested can message you through Messenger.

How to read your results
With Advantage+ placements, Meta suggests the Breakdown filter in Ads Manager to see how your ads perform by placement. It notes that those values are estimated.
In Ads Manager, click Campaigns, Ad sets or Ads. Click Breakdown, which sits between Columns and Reports, and choose the breakdown you want. The table updates to include it.
A boosted listing has its own insights. In Marketplace, open Your account and, in Your listings, click Options next to the listing you boosted. Then click View insights.
They show reach and, for local items without shipping, the messaging conversations started and the cost of each. For items with shipping, they show checkouts initiated. Ads Manager adds frequency, link clicks and impressions.
Our guide to Meta Ads Manager shows where each report lives.
