Short answer: Google Ads charges you according to your payment setting. On postpay, Google charges your payment method on the first day of each month and whenever your costs reach your payment threshold. You find the threshold, your balance and the next charge in the Billing summary.
The payment settings in Google Ads
Google says payment settings determine when you pay for your ads. They are postpay, formerly known as automatic payments; prepay, formerly known as manual payments; and monthly invoicing. Which ones you can use depends on your account’s billing country and currency.
| Payment setting | When you pay | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Postpay | After your ads run, at your payment threshold or on the first of the month | Formerly automatic payments |
| Prepay | Before your ads run | Ads stop when the payment runs out; not available in the United States |
| Monthly invoicing | Once a month, against a line of credit | Only for businesses that meet Google’s requirements |

Monthly invoicing gives you a line of credit and a monthly invoice. Google lists requirements such as being registered as a business for at least one year, an account in good standing for at least six months and a minimum monthly spend. Our guide to the Google Ads manager account explains why invoicing also needs a manager account.
How the payment threshold works
On postpay, your payment threshold starts at a set amount. Each time your account reaches it before the end of the month, Google charges you and raises the threshold, up to the highest one. The amount charged can be slightly over the threshold if costs build up quickly.
Google doesn’t email you when your threshold goes up, so check it in your account. Some accounts can raise it themselves with Edit threshold, for fewer and possibly larger charges. Even if you never reach it, you are billed on the first day of the following month.
Why a charge can look wrong
Google says a campaign might spend up to twice its average daily budget on a given day. For most campaigns, the monthly spending limit is 30.4 times the average daily budget.
Two identical charges are often an authorization request, a pending amount that matches a processed charge and usually disappears within several days. A charge after you pause your ads can be the costs from before they stopped, since stopping can take several hours and billing runs monthly.
How to check your Google Ads charges
- In Google Ads, select the Billing icon and then Summary.
- Read the Next automatic payment card for the date and your threshold.
- Check the Balance card for what you owe right now.
- Open Settings in the Billing menu to see your setting under How you pay.
- Look for Edit threshold if you would rather have fewer charges.
- Add a backup payment method so a declined card doesn’t stop your ads.
- Match bank charges to the 10-digit customer ID after GOOGLE *ADS on your statement.
Before you dispute a charge
- You know which payment setting your account uses.
- You checked your current payment threshold.
- You know a day can spend up to twice the average daily budget.
- You waited a few days for a pending authorization to clear.
- You checked every Google Ads account you run.
- You have the date, amount and transaction ID of the charge.
RememberOn postpay, several charges a month are normal: the first of the month plus every time you reach your threshold. Read the Billing summary before you call your bank.
If a charge still doesn’t add up
Google’s help on disputes says to verify where a charge comes from first. When you contact support, have the reason, the date, the amount and the transaction ID, which you find in the month card of the Billing summary.
If you ask your bank to reverse the charge, that is a chargeback, and your bank makes the final decision. If billing problems come with a suspension, our guide to a suspended Google Ads account covers the appeal.

Quick answers about Google Ads billing
Why does Google Ads charge me several times a month?
On postpay, Google charges you on the first day of each month and whenever your costs reach your payment threshold. The threshold starts at a set amount and rises each time you reach it, so several charges in one month are normal.
Why was I charged more than my daily budget?
Google says a campaign might spend up to twice its average daily budget on a given day. For most campaigns, the monthly spending limit is 30.4 times the average daily budget.
Why do I see two identical Google Ads charges?
Often one of them is an authorization request, a pending amount that matches a processed charge and usually disappears within several days. If neither is pending, it may be a double charge, and your bank can help.
Why was I charged after I paused my ads?
It can take several hours for ads to stop serving completely, and you are billed for costs from before they stopped. Google bills on a monthly cycle, so the final charge can arrive weeks later.
How do I know a charge on my statement is from Google Ads?
Google says its charges usually appear as GOOGLE *ADS followed by a 10-digit number. That number is the customer ID of the account where the charge came from, which helps if you run more than one account.
