Short answer: The best fonts for a website are the ones your visitors can read that load fast. Use as few typefaces as you can: a system or web safe font costs nothing to download, and one variable font can cover several weights. Serve web fonts as WOFF2 with font-display set, and size your fallback so text doesn’t jump.

Why the font choice is also a speed choice

web.dev calls web fonts a performance bottleneck that affects Core Web Vitals. Each font file is something the browser must find, download and swap in before the text looks final.

Its first advice is simple: the fastest font to deliver is a font that isn’t requested in the first place. System fonts and variable fonts are two ways to load fewer web fonts.

Ways to set your site’s fonts

Option What it is When it fits
System font The font of the visitor’s own device, through system-ui Body text, with nothing to download
Web safe font Arial, Georgia, Verdana and others found on most systems A familiar look without a font file
Variable font One file that holds several weights or styles A brand typeface used in several weights
Self-hosted font Your own font file, served from your domain When you can subset and compress it yourself
Font service Fonts loaded from a provider such as Google Fonts Quick setup, with a preconnect to the provider

From web.dev’s font best practices and MDN’s guide to text styling, read November 3, 2026.

How to choose and load your fonts

  1. Use as few typefaces as you can, because every extra font is another file to download.
  2. For body text, consider a system font or a web safe font.
  3. If your brand needs its own typeface, prefer one variable font over several font files.
  4. Serve your web fonts as WOFF2 only.
  5. Set font-display in each @font-face rule; swap shows text right away in a fallback font.
  6. Preload the most important font, with care, or preconnect to the font provider.
  7. Match your fallback font with size-adjust, so text doesn’t shift when the web font arrives.

How our own fonts load

We read the fonts on our home page on November 3, 2026, as a visitor. Headings and body text ask for Satoshi, followed by fallback fonts and finally the device’s system fonts.

The page downloads a single font file: Satoshi as a variable WOFF2 of 42,588 bytes, from our own domain. It is preloaded in the HTML and its @font-face rule uses font-display: swap.

Our fallbacks are local Roboto or Arial with size-adjust values between 96.9% and 106.3%, so the text keeps close to Satoshi’s size while the file arrives.

Before you call your fonts done

  • The site loads only the fonts it uses.
  • Web font files are WOFF2.
  • Each @font-face rule sets font-display.
  • The most important font is preloaded, or its provider preconnected.
  • Fallback fonts are size-matched to the web font.
  • Text is readable before the web font finishes loading.

RememberFewer fonts load faster: as few typefaces as you can, WOFF2, font-display set and a fallback that matches the size.

If you want type that fits your brand and loads fast, our web design service can set it up with you.

Quick answers about website fonts

What are the best fonts for a website?

There is no single best font. For speed, web.dev points to system fonts, which need no download, and to variable fonts, which replace several files with one. For a familiar look, MDN lists web safe fonts such as Arial, Georgia and Verdana.

What are web safe fonts?

Fonts found on nearly all instances of the most used operating systems. MDN lists Arial, Courier New, Georgia, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS and Verdana, and warns that Trebuchet MS isn’t widely available on mobile systems.

What does font-display: swap do?

MDN describes swap as an extremely small block period and an infinite swap period for the font. In practice, the browser shows your text in a fallback font right away and switches to the web font whenever it arrives.

Should I host my fonts or use Google Fonts?

Either can work. web.dev says self-hosting should perform better on paper, but in practice the difference is less clear cut. If you self-host, apply subsetting and WOFF2 yourself; if you use a provider, preconnect to it.

How many fonts should a website use?

As few as you can. web.dev says the fastest font to deliver is one that isn’t requested at all, and that system fonts and variable fonts cut the number of web fonts. Our own site loads a single variable font file.
