Short answer: Start with the work you repeat for every customer: answering the same questions, booking, following up on new leads and asking for reviews. Automate one task at a time, test it as a customer would, and keep a person on anything that commits you to a price, a date or a promise. Before any automated text goes out, make sure the person agreed to get it.
What AI automation means for a small business
Classic automation follows rules you write: when a form arrives, send this email. AI automation adds a model that reads and writes language, so it can answer a question in its own words, sort messages by topic or draft a reply. That flexibility is also the risk. Meta’s own help for its WhatsApp agent warns that “AI-generated messages may not be accurate or appropriate.”
Most small businesses already use AI in some form. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce published its 2026 report on small business technology on October 2, 2026. It found that 66% of small businesses use AI, up 8 points from 2025 and nearly three times the 23% of 2023. Among those users, 78% say limiting access to it would slow their growth.

Four tasks to automate first
Answers to the questions you get every day
Hours, location, prices, payment and shipping come up every week. On the WhatsApp Business app, Meta Business Agent can answer questions about your basic business information, products and services, pricing, discounts, payment and shipping, and it can recommend products. It answers from your public profiles, your website and your catalog, so those have to be right first. You turn it on in the app under Tools › AI agent.
Check the limits before you rely on it. Meta says the feature is only available in some countries and to select businesses. Turning it on may limit some app features, including broadcast lists, disappearing messages and greeting and away messages. Customers are told the first time they chat with a business that has the AI connected. If you answer a customer by hand, the AI stops replying for you unless you unmute it.
Booking
A booking page saves the back and forth of finding a time. Google Calendar’s appointment schedules work with a personal Google account or a Workspace account: you set your availability and share a link where people book an open slot. You create the schedule on a computer: the Calendar app for Android, iPhone and iPad can’t do it. Some features need an eligible Google Workspace or Google One subscription. By default, nobody can book less than 4 hours ahead.
Follow-up on every new lead
Every lead should get an answer and a next step, even on a busy day. A simple flow covers most of it: the form or WhatsApp message creates a contact in your CRM, a first reply goes out right away, and a reminder tells you who still needs a call. AI can draft that first reply and sort leads by what they asked for.
Texts have their own rules in the US: consent under the TCPA, and A2P 10DLC, the carriers’ registration for business texts sent from a regular 10-digit number. Our guides on TCPA rules for text messages and 10DLC registration explain both. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges per delivered message; our guide to WhatsApp Business API pricing has the rates.
Review requests
Reviews come from asking. Google’s help suggests sending customers a Google link or a QR code to leave a review, and replying to reviews, good and bad. An automation can send that link after each finished job; our guide on how to get more Google reviews shows where to find it.
Google says that offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited. And the FTC’s rule on reviews, announced August 14, 2024, targets fake reviews, AI-generated ones included, and bans incentives tied to a positive or negative review. AI can draft your replies (see how to respond to negative reviews), but a person should read them before they go out.

What to keep in human hands
- Anything that commits you. Prices, dates, refunds and guarantees. An AI reply can be wrong, and the customer reads it as your word.
- Complaints and sensitive topics. Health, legal and money questions go to a person.
- Reviews. Ask for them. Never write them, buy them or reward only the good ones.
- Who gets your texts. Consent first, and an easy way to stop.
The rules keep moving, too. In the Chamber’s 2026 survey, six in ten small businesses said they worry about litigation and compliance costs from a patchwork of state privacy and AI laws.
How to start without breaking anything
- Write down the questions you answer most and the tasks you repeat every week.
- Pick one, and write the exact answer or rule you want, in your own words.
- Set it up in one tool and test it as a customer would, from your own phone or email.
- Read every conversation or booking it handles in the first week, and fix what it got wrong.
- Only then add the next task.
If you’d rather have it built for you, our automation service does it in three layers: measurement, lead follow-up and an AI assistant for your chat and WhatsApp, in English and Spanish. AI drafts the work, and a person approves it before it goes out.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI automation worth it for a small business?
It pays off on tasks you repeat many times a week, like answering the same questions, booking and following up on leads. Start with one task, measure the time it saves and the leads it answers, and keep a person on prices, dates and complaints before you add more.
Can AI answer my customers on WhatsApp?
Yes, where Meta offers it. Meta Business Agent on the WhatsApp Business app answers questions about your hours, location, products, prices, payment and shipping from your profiles, website and catalog. Meta says it is only available in some countries and to select businesses, and that AI-generated messages may not be accurate.
Can I use AI to get more reviews?
You can automate the request: send your Google review link or QR code after each job. You can’t use AI to write reviews. The FTC’s rule targets fake reviews, AI-generated ones included, and incentives tied to a positive or negative review, and Google prohibits incentives for reviews.
Do automated texts need consent?
Yes. In the US, texting customers has consent rules under the TCPA, and business texts from a regular 10-digit number need A2P 10DLC registration first. Our guides on TCPA rules for texts and on 10DLC registration explain what each one asks for.
How many small businesses use AI?
About two in three. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 report found that 66% of small businesses use AI, up from 23% in 2023. Of those users, 78% say limiting access to it would slow their growth.
